Preaching from 1 Peter 1:1-17, the Reverend George Speers explores what it means to “conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile”. Rev Speers unpacks four dimensions of holy fear: freedom from the fear of man, freedom from unbelief and distrust of God’s word, freedom from slavish dread in favour of filial fear as adopted children, and a vigilant, healthy caution towards sin. Drawing on figures from Daniel’s three friends and Esther to Calvin, Matthew Henry, John Owen and Spurgeon, he calls Christians to live as pilgrims who fear God rather than man, trust his promises, and pursue holiness with joyful reverence rather than dread.
