Preaching from Deuteronomy 32:11, the Reverend George Speers explores the image of a mother eagle stirring up her nest to force her young to fly, and applies it to the ways God unsettles his people's comfort. Rev Speers traces three forms of this 'needful disturbance' — through outward circumstances, through the exposure of self-righteousness, and through the weaning of old age and death — drawing on figures from Israel's history, Manasseh, Saul of Tarsus, Jacob and Paul, alongside Calvin, Luther, Spurgeon, Sproul, Owen and Edwards. The sermon closes with a call to stop resisting God's disturbances and to trust the 'severe mercy' that drives believers, and unbelievers alike, toward Christ.
