occult wrong? 00:01:22.620 --> 00:01:49.720 Why is the occult wrong?' and Kurt Koch the German Protestant theologian pastor and counsellor known for his extensive work on the occult drawing on thousands of counselling cases addresses the risks of both the ignorance of and the unhealthy preoccupation with occult realities and in his preface to his book Between Christ and Satan he quotes C. are two equal and opposite errors into which our race can fall about the devils. 00:02:01.125 --> 00:02:04.085 One is to disbelieve in their existence altogether. 00:02:04.405 --> 00:02:10.165 The to demonic powers in the spiritual realm is a lot like your relationship to germs in your physical realm. 00:02:31.325 --> 00:02:33.485 You know that the germs are all around you. 00:02:33.805 --> 00:02:37.565 He then asks the question, should you live in constant fear of them? 00:02:38.285 --> 00:02:41.245 He says if you did you would be a hypochondriac. 00:02:41.325 --> 00:02:51.290 The only appropriate response to the swarm of germs around you is to eat the right food, get enough rest and exercise and keep yourself and your possessions clean. 00:02:51.450 --> 00:02:53.450 Your immune system will protect you. 00:02:53.610 --> 00:02:59.610 However if you didn't believe in germs you would be less likely to take those protective measures. 00:03:00.255 --> 00:03:03.615 And then he says it's the same in the spiritual realm. 00:03:03.615 --> 00:03:07.295 Demons are like invisible germs looking for someone to infect. 00:03:07.455 --> 00:03:10.175 We are never told in Scripture to be hypochondriac and both extremes leave a person vulnerable and the healthy response to the whole idea of the occult and the powers of darkness is a super awareness without obsession grounded in a serve his purposes. 00:03:56.795 --> 00:04:07.915 And Paul speaks about this in two Corinthians two eleven where he urges us not to be outwitted by Satan through ignorance of his designs. 00:04:08.395 --> 00:04:17.600 And the occult is one of those designs an extreme unhealthy fascination with the demonic and draws people into deeper bondage. 00:04:18.080 --> 00:04:30.035 Unpleasant of course as this subject is we must understand if we are to warn others of the dangers that are connected with it we too must understand something about it. 00:04:30.355 --> 00:04:39.235 So looking at the question this evening why the occult is wrong, we want to look at this by asking another four questions. 00:04:39.850 --> 00:04:43.290 First question is what does the occult involve? 00:04:43.930 --> 00:04:50.810 Second question is what does scripture can, how does scripture condemn occult practices? 00:04:50.810 --> 00:04:55.715 Secondly, why does God prohibit the occult so strongly? 00:04:55.955 --> 00:04:59.715 And then fourthly, where can true knowledge and power be found? 00:04:59.715 --> 00:05:05.635 So let's look at, this subject this evening trying to answer these four questions. 00:05:05.635 --> 00:05:10.530 So let's address this first question here, what does the occult involve? 00:05:10.530 --> 00:05:12.370 What does the occult involve? 00:05:12.370 --> 00:05:18.130 Well the word occult comes from the Latin for secret or hidden. 00:05:18.290 --> 00:05:31.255 Occult practices seek secret knowledge and the use of invisible powers to control events or perhaps to control people and that knowledge and power are sought from the unseen world of spirits. 00:05:31.655 --> 00:05:44.980 And under this heading fall many activities fortune telling attempts to obtain hidden knowledge of the future through perhaps astrology or horoscopes, turret or ordinary cards, palmistry, reading tea leaves. 00:05:45.700 --> 00:05:51.620 Communication with the dead whether through a medium, a Ouija board or a seance is likewise the occult. 00:05:52.325 --> 00:06:04.325 Real magic distinct from the harmless sleight of hand or stage illusions seeks to control persons or circumstances through secret ceremonies or spells or incantations. 00:06:04.920 --> 00:06:18.520 And at the far end of the spectrum stands of course the open worship of the devil and these are the sorts of things meant by the term occult and many treat such practices as harmless entertainment. 00:06:18.895 --> 00:06:24.815 Horoscopes appear in newspapers and magazines and are read by millions who think nothing of it. 00:06:24.815 --> 00:06:26.575 They just read it and laugh at it. 00:06:26.575 --> 00:06:29.935 Ouija boards have been sold as games. 00:06:29.935 --> 00:06:39.590 Tesco's a number of years ago were selling it as a game until complaints were made and yet the occult is no mere make believe. 00:06:39.590 --> 00:06:59.515 There is fakery yes and nonsense mixed in with it but genuine occult activity is real and it's dangerous and Christians affirm an unseen spiritual realm created by God and populated by spiritual beings and many of whom followed Lucifer into rebellion and became demons. 00:07:00.080 --> 00:07:14.960 Ephesians chapter six in verse 12 reminds us that our struggle is not against flesh and blood but against rulers and authorities and cosmic powers of this present darkness and spiritual forces of evil in heavenly places. 00:07:15.695 --> 00:07:20.975 Occult practices tap into real and perilous powers. 00:07:21.695 --> 00:07:41.220 And Scripture assumes this particular reality we can go to first Samuel chapter 28 and we know there we have a record about King Saul and he consults the witch or the medium at Endor and whatever questions the episode raises it shows that the medium contacted a spirit. 00:07:41.780 --> 00:07:47.855 Egyptian and Babylonian magicians performed genuine wonders by their secret arts. 00:07:47.855 --> 00:07:52.495 For example in Acts chapter seven they imitated the first two plagues. 00:07:53.135 --> 00:08:03.700 And in Acts chapter eight, Simon the magician amused the people for a long time with his magic, not through trick cards but through the exercise of occult power. 00:08:04.020 --> 00:08:20.095 In Acts chapter 16, a slave girl in Philippi possessed a spirit of divination and accurately told fortunes of course until Paul cast the spirit out on her in Jesus name and then after thereafter of course she never did it again. 00:08:20.415 --> 00:08:23.855 And the Bible never dismisses these things as fairy tales. 00:08:23.855 --> 00:08:29.020 They're real, they're dangerous, so that's what the occult involves. 00:08:29.660 --> 00:08:35.260 And we need to remind ourselves of that fact that the occult deals with secret and hidden things. 00:08:35.260 --> 00:08:44.155 It involves seeking secret knowledge and the use of invisible powers to control people or events by tapping in to the unseen spirit world. 00:08:44.315 --> 00:09:10.075 And it includes these practices such as fortune telling through astrology and horoscopes and tarot or ordinary cards or palmistry or tea leaves, communication with the dead via mediums or Ouija boards or seances real magic distinct from stage illusions using ceremonies and spells and incantations and control of circumstances and at the extreme of course the open worship of the devil. 00:09:10.235 --> 00:09:21.995 And although many do regard some of these things as harmless entertainment, genuine occult activity is real, it's dangerous, it's drawing upon demonic power. 00:09:22.470 --> 00:09:26.470 And that's why Scripture affirms this spiritual reality. 00:09:26.470 --> 00:09:34.070 That's why Scripture sets out very clearly here in Deuteronomy chapter 18, the things that are set before us. 00:09:34.070 --> 00:09:38.895 And that's why elsewhere in Scripture we have the story of the witch at Endor. 00:09:38.895 --> 00:09:43.135 We have the secret arts of the Egyptian magicians. 00:09:43.135 --> 00:09:47.295 We have Simon the magician in Samaria mentioned in Acts 18. 00:09:47.295 --> 00:09:53.120 And this girl, this slave girl with the spirit of divination in Acts 16. 00:09:53.120 --> 00:09:57.040 So the Bible never treats these things as mere fairy tales. 00:09:57.040 --> 00:10:00.240 They are real and they are perilous. 00:10:00.800 --> 00:10:03.280 But let's move on and address our second question. 00:10:03.280 --> 00:10:07.095 How does scripture condemn occult practices? 00:10:07.495 --> 00:10:10.695 How does Scripture condemn occult practices? 00:10:11.415 --> 00:10:14.695 And God's Word forbids any involvement in the occult. 00:10:14.695 --> 00:10:27.550 That's why we read from Deuteronomy chapter 18 verses nine to 14 and really in many ways this is the definitive passage that deals with this, that gives treatment to this. 00:10:27.790 --> 00:10:35.485 As Israel stood on the border of Canaan Moses warned them not to learn the abominable practices of the nations. 00:10:36.365 --> 00:10:45.965 Then the verses read, When you come into the land that the Lord your God is giving you, you shall not learn to follow the abominable practices of these nations. 00:10:46.640 --> 00:11:09.115 There shall not be found among you anyone who burns his son or his daughter as an offering, anyone who practices divination or tells fortunes or interprets omens, or a sorcerer or a charmer or a medium or a necromancer, or one who inquires of the dead, for whoever does these things is an abomination to the Lord. 00:11:09.515 --> 00:11:13.915 And because of these abominations the Lord your God is driving them out before you. 00:11:13.995 --> 00:11:22.300 You shall be blameless before the Lord your God for these nations which you are about to dispossess listen to fortune tellers and the diviners. 00:11:22.300 --> 00:11:27.260 As for you, the Lord your God has not allowed you to do this. 00:11:27.420 --> 00:11:40.765 And Moses lists eight related activities: divination, fortune telling, interpreting, omen, sorcery, charm, charming mediumship, necromancy, and inquiry of the dead. 00:11:40.765 --> 00:11:53.630 Now the precise boundaries of these things blur, but all seek knowledge ordinarily hidden by means of the spirit world and all aim at par over people and events. 00:11:53.710 --> 00:12:04.045 And remember the king of Moab, he hired Balaam if you remember not merely for information against Israel but to curse them by occult means. 00:12:04.045 --> 00:12:07.165 We're told about that in Numbers chapter 22. 00:12:07.405 --> 00:12:11.660 And God calls these practices here an abominations. 00:12:11.820 --> 00:12:13.500 He says they're detestable. 00:12:13.500 --> 00:12:19.980 He says they're loathsome and the people who practice them become abominable in His sight. 00:12:19.980 --> 00:12:27.925 The activities stand in the same category as burning children, as sacrifices to pagan gods. 00:12:28.085 --> 00:12:37.445 Verse 12 here declares that the Lord destroys those who do them and that's part of why Israel was commanded to go in and possess the Canaanite land. 00:12:37.930 --> 00:12:39.770 God saw what was going on. 00:12:39.930 --> 00:12:46.810 God wanted to wipe this out and God forbids not only the acts themselves but even learning about them. 00:12:46.810 --> 00:12:49.930 You shall not learn to follow the abominable practices. 00:12:50.090 --> 00:12:51.930 Don't experiment on the fringes. 00:12:51.930 --> 00:12:54.535 Don't dabble where it seems innocent. 00:12:54.535 --> 00:12:57.015 The whirlpool will suck you in. 00:12:57.975 --> 00:13:05.655 Another passages which reinforce this prohibition are two Kings chapter 17 and verse 17. 00:13:05.880 --> 00:13:12.280 It lists divination and sorcery among the sins for which Israel and Judah went into exile. 00:13:12.280 --> 00:13:23.675 Yes they went in, they cleared the land, they cleared the Canaanites, they put down the practices of occult and yet they themselves imbibed it eventually. 00:13:24.955 --> 00:13:33.520 Isaiah chapter two in verse six rebukes the people full of diviners from the East and fortune tellers like the Philistines. 00:13:33.840 --> 00:13:38.960 Galatians chapter five and verse 20 includes sorcery among the works of the flesh. 00:13:39.040 --> 00:13:51.155 Revelation chapter 21 and verse eight places sorcerers alongside murderers, the sexually immoral and the idolaters who will have their part, we're told, in the lake of fire. 00:13:51.475 --> 00:13:54.035 And the biblical verdict is unambiguous. 00:13:54.035 --> 00:13:57.715 Any involvement in occult practices is an abomination. 00:13:58.260 --> 00:14:21.955 So Scripture forbids every form of involvement with the occult in the strongest possible language and we see it clearly here in this passage of Scripture in Deuteronomy chapter 18 where Moses as Israel prepared to enter Canaan listed eight related practices and he calls them, he brands them abominations. 00:14:22.195 --> 00:14:26.515 These activities stand in the same category as child sacrifice. 00:14:26.515 --> 00:14:33.030 Those who practice them become detestable in God's sight and He destroys those who persist in them. 00:14:33.030 --> 00:14:45.125 And all of them seek hidden knowledge and power through a spirit world as when the king of Moab of course if you remember hired Balaam not merely for information but to curse the nation. 00:14:45.365 --> 00:14:50.085 And God forbids not only acts themselves but learning about them. 00:14:50.085 --> 00:14:52.005 And we see it clearly set down here. 00:14:52.005 --> 00:14:53.685 The biblical judgment is clear. 00:14:54.130 --> 00:15:06.050 Any engagement with practices, occult practices is an abomination and note Scripture condemns occult practices unequivocally. 00:15:07.055 --> 00:15:20.575 And we only have to read ourselves through Scripture to see how the Lord sees it whether it's second Kings, it's Isaiah chapter two verse six, whether it's Galatians five twenty or Revelation chapter one verse 18. 00:15:22.210 --> 00:15:25.170 00:15:32.530 --> 00:15:39.395 Well, two reasons stand out and the first reason is this, the occult is the denial of God's wisdom. 00:15:39.715 --> 00:15:42.435 The occult is the denial of God's wisdom. 00:15:42.435 --> 00:15:59.320 One of the great verses of the Bible is Deuteronomy chapter 29 in verse 29 and it states there, The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our children forever that we may do all the words of this law. 00:15:59.935 --> 00:16:02.335 And there are things God keeps secret. 00:16:02.975 --> 00:16:06.015 They are not meant for us. 00:16:06.015 --> 00:16:07.055 They're not meant... 00:16:08.895 --> 00:16:12.590 They may not be good for us to know. 00:16:12.590 --> 00:16:20.030 We might misuse the information and we might not be able to bear up to what we're about to find out. 00:16:20.350 --> 00:16:23.150 And will it truly benefit us to know the day of her death? 00:16:23.150 --> 00:16:26.590 Would it benefit us to know the death of the day of a loved one? 00:16:26.925 --> 00:16:31.325 And God infinitely wise has revealed what we need to know. 00:16:31.565 --> 00:16:36.765 And to pry into the occult means that you're basically saying, Well I don't trust your judgment. 00:16:38.125 --> 00:16:39.245 I know better Lord. 00:16:39.850 --> 00:16:52.890 And William Perkins writing away back in the sixteenth century wrote that those who join themselves to Satan renounce the Lord who made them, they do quite cut themselves off from the covenant made with him. 00:16:53.195 --> 00:16:56.875 And on the contrary they give themselves unto Satan as their God. 00:16:57.435 --> 00:17:05.515 And it's a deliberate reaction of course of God's deliberate rejection should I say of God's authority and wisdom. 00:17:06.550 --> 00:17:12.070 And then secondly, the second reason the occult is dangerous for our well-being. 00:17:12.070 --> 00:17:13.830 It's dangerous for our well-being. 00:17:13.830 --> 00:17:18.390 The very means of obtaining the knowledge and power is demonic. 00:17:18.390 --> 00:17:26.845 Fakery exists and is foolish yet genuine occultism however it appears to us is demonic. 00:17:27.085 --> 00:17:35.270 The devil masquerades as an angel of light and the same lie he told Eve he repeats, You will be like God knowing good and evil. 00:17:35.270 --> 00:17:37.590 God is withholding what is best for you. 00:17:37.750 --> 00:17:39.430 I will set you free. 00:17:39.830 --> 00:17:44.790 And Adam and Eve believed him and found bondage and they found misery and they found death. 00:17:45.405 --> 00:17:47.885 And that pattern repeats itself. 00:17:48.365 --> 00:17:57.405 Those who turn to the occult for healing, for guidance or contact with the dead may receive temporary relief. 00:17:57.405 --> 00:18:10.910 They might receive information only to discover a deeper bondage, psychological torment, inability to pray or to read the Scriptures, dread, sometimes self harm, inexplicable death. 00:18:11.745 --> 00:18:19.345 And the spirits give what will keep a person dependent like a dealer supplying the next dose of drugs. 00:18:19.745 --> 00:18:34.020 And what looks like getting power is actually surrendering to it and demonic beings are smooth talking con artists who pursue people to hand over control. 00:18:35.060 --> 00:18:41.885 Playing with the occult is like a child playing with matches, One spark can destroy the whole house. 00:18:42.125 --> 00:18:47.005 So don't forget God forbids the occult for two reasons. 00:18:47.485 --> 00:18:50.045 First, it rejects His wisdom. 00:18:50.780 --> 00:19:01.420 As Deuteronomy twenty nine twenty nine teaches, The secret things belong to the Lord while the things He has made known belong to us so that we may live in obedience. 00:19:01.660 --> 00:19:07.425 And God does withhold certain knowledge from us for our own good, for our own well-being. 00:19:07.665 --> 00:19:16.625 Secondly, the occult is harmful to our well-being because it's the true source of demonic power and we have got to stay away from it. 00:19:17.230 --> 00:19:20.830 And we are not being set free in any way. 00:19:21.070 --> 00:19:27.950 And it's important that we stand against such things and those who pursue the occult for whatever reasons. 00:19:27.950 --> 00:19:31.710 It's only a short term answer and it'll take you 00:19:44.585 And then we come to the fourth and final question, where can true knowledge and power be found? 00:19:44.825 --> 00:19:48.025 Where can true knowledge and power be found? 00:19:48.840 --> 00:19:52.600 Well the occult is a counterfeit gospel. 00:19:52.760 --> 00:19:58.200 It promises knowledge and power but it delivers to us slavery and death. 00:19:58.600 --> 00:20:10.835 And the true gospel offers genuine knowledge not trivial details of the future but knowledge of God, ourselves, of that which is true and good. 00:20:11.155 --> 00:20:12.995 And that's what the true gospel gives us. 00:20:12.995 --> 00:20:24.040 It offers us genuine power, not the power to manipulate others, but the power to love God and to love our neighbor and to live in fellowship for which we were why Paul said in Romans chapter six and verses 10 to 12, he calls us to be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might putting on the whole armour of God so that we might stand against the devil's schemes. 00:21:01.005 --> 00:21:10.125 And then in first John chapter four and verse four, it's declared there, He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. 00:21:10.205 --> 00:21:14.125 And Scripture repeatedly displays this greater power. 00:21:14.880 --> 00:21:23.040 Pharaoh's magicians turned rods into serpents, Janus and Jamberees, yet Aaron's serpents swallowed theirs. 00:21:23.040 --> 00:21:26.640 They imitated only the first two plagues and then it failed. 00:21:28.365 --> 00:21:38.845 Balaam tried four times to curse Israel and each time he finds himself pronouncing a blessing including one of the most glorious prophecies concerning the Lord Jesus Christ. 00:21:41.500 --> 00:21:45.580 Jesus Himself if you remember cast out demons with one word legion. 00:21:45.580 --> 00:21:51.820 A multitude of unclean spirits pleaded not to be destroyed because they were were powerless before Him. 00:21:52.305 --> 00:22:02.065 The apostles continued if you remember the same ministry, In the end the devil and all who practice the occult arts will be cast into the lake of fire. 00:22:02.065 --> 00:22:06.145 He who is in us is infinitely greater. --> 00:22:27.045 And the same Lord who described Paul's mission as opening eyes, turning them from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God still does the same thing today. 00:22:27.045 --> 00:22:46.730 Even if you're deeply entangled, maybe there's someone listening on this on Amazon or whatever, even if you're deeply entangled in the occult, Jesus is able to set you free and to call us away from that and to deliver us. 00:22:46.730 --> 00:22:51.425 The Apostle John says the whole world lies in the power of the evil one. 00:22:51.425 --> 00:23:00.545 If you've never received Jesus Christ as Savior, whether you have dabbled in the occult or never touched a horoscope, you remain under that power. 00:23:00.545 --> 00:23:05.700 Paul tells us in Ephesians chapter two, without Christ we are children of wrath. 00:23:06.420 --> 00:23:12.020 We're children of the devil and decent churchgoing will not save you. 00:23:12.340 --> 00:23:16.500 You will share the devil's destruction unless you are delivered. 00:23:17.065 --> 00:23:26.265 And let's be very clear, the occult is a counterfeit gospel that promises knowledge and power, but delivers slavery and death. 00:23:26.265 --> 00:23:43.770 And the true gospel of Jesus Christ gives us the genuine knowledge of God, a knowledge of ourselves and all that is good together with the power to love God and to love
